Abstract
Background/Purpose:
Healthy mid-life women commonly report sleep related symptoms that contribute to poor sleep quality. Factors such as sociodemographic characteristics, menopausal transition stages, health conditions, and physical activity levels have been found to predict presence of sleep related symptoms. However, few studies have examined how these predictors of sleep related symptom differ across ethnic groups in mid-life women.
Methods:
This is a secondary analysis of data from a cross-sectional Internet study that explored ethnic differences in midlife women’s attitudes toward physical activity. There were 542midlife women from 4 different ethnic backgrounds: Hispanic, Asian, African American, and White. This analysis included data on sleep related symptoms identified in the Midlife Women’s Symptom Index, background characteristics, perceived health, menopausal status, and participation in physical activity assessed with The Kaiser Physical Activity Survey. The data was analyzed using Pearson correlation and hierarchical multiple regression analyses.
Results:
Across all four ethnic groups, self-perceived general health was negatively associated with sleep related symptoms. In Hispanic women, employment and length of stay in the U.S. were positively associated with sleep related symptoms. In Asian women, household/care-giving activity was positively associated with sleep related symptoms, whereas active living activity was negatively associated. In African American women, occupational activity was positively associated with sleep related symptoms. In White women, medication use and occupational activity were both positively associated with sleep related symptoms, whereas family income was negatively associated with these symptoms.
Conclusions and Implications:
These findings suggest there are ethnic differences and similarities in predictors for sleep related symptoms in midlife women. These ethnic-specific predictors need to be considered in future development of sleep-related interventions for midlife women
