Abstract
Is It Safe to Call 911 in a Mental Health Crisis?
Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, v 61(10), S57
Oct 2022
Abstract
Child and adolescent psychiatrists often advise patients and families to call 911 in case of a mental health crisis. However, data suggest that individuals with a mental illness or disability and Black youth are both at significantly elevated risk of being harmed or killed by law enforcement during an encounter. Our objectives were to examine the risks and benefits of calling 911 vs other crisis supports and to revise patient-facing written and verbal guidance to incorporate this information.
