A framework for cognitive economics
01 Jan 1992
Abstract
Creates an outline of an economic theory in which cognitive processes are central. Summarizes some important ideas and findings from cognitive science. Explores some research resources for cognitive economics and considers what might distinguish cognitive economics from other studies. Proposes a theory of economic choice--impulse filtering--as an alternative to neoclassical theory and discusses groping, a special case of impulse-filtering; impulse-filtering as a theory in social sciences; and impulse-filtering as a theory of will. Proposes a linguistic conception of rationality; explores the relation of values to rationality; and presents some applications of the linguistic concept of rationality. Considers the critical study of rationales for public policy. Discusses emergent rationality and technical progress. Explores a few points suggested by the impulse-filtering hypothesis and the hypothesis of emergent rationality for the study of enterprises and markets. Sketches a theory of creativity in terms of impulse-filtering and the linguistic concept of rationality, and discusses the creative enterprise. McCain is Professor of Economics at Drexel University.
