Abstract
A novel computational algorithm is presented in this paper to calculate the heat transfer to/from non-isothermal and inhomogeneous mixtures of participating gases by incorporating the non-gray radiative behavior. An idealized problem is considered where two participating gas streams enter a channel and produce a non-homogeneous non-isothermal flowfield. The flow field is solved numerically while the radiative heat transfer is modeled by using the Discrete Ordinates Method. The non-gray radiative properties of the mixture of participating gases are calculated by a wide band model. To incorporate the non-homogeneous characteristics of the mixture, the radiative spectrum is divided into a number of finite wavelength intervals, such that the absorption coefficient at each computational cell can be reconstructed from the above wavelength intervals.
