Abstract
Fourth edition textbook explores game theory and its application to questions of strategy and conflict, presenting it as a distinct and interdisciplinary approach to the study of human behavior. Explains that many problems of strategy can be studied as if they were games. Analyzes interactions among people involved in games, outlining a series of equilibrium concepts in order to discover patterns of interaction that are stable and predictable. Reviews games in which one or more players make a commitment to which the other player can then respond. Considers the complexities of repeated play in simple two-person games. Delves into cooperative games with and without coalition function form. Describes a number of advanced game-theoretic topics, including how to approach games with many players, game-theoretic reinterpretations of traditional duopoly models, the possibility that decision-makers may have mistaken beliefs about their counterpart's strategy, correlated strategy equilibria, the game-theoretic analysis of voting, the role of game theory in social mechanism design, the parallel between games and experiments, and the concept of evolutionarily stable strategies. McCain is Professor in the School of Economics at Drexel University. Index.
