Modeling of solid particle flows, heat transfer, and mass transfer in rotary kilns
01 Jan 1998
Abstract
Results from a computational model are presented in this paper for material flow, and heat and mass transfer in a rotary kiln. A kinetic theory based granular flow model has been employed to establish the particle flow field in a two-dimensional plane to predict the rotation induced flow of the solid particles. A pseudo three-dimensional model for heat and mass transfer and kinetics was developed as an extension to one-dimensional models which are usually used to predict thermal or concentration gradients in the bulk bed. To validate the model, limestone calcination is predicted and compared with available experimental data from a pilot kiln.
