Abstract
In May 1992, the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law ("UNCITRAL”) observed its twenty-fifth anniversary. To commemorate the historic occasion, UNCITRAL convened an unprecedented week-long Congress entitled the "Congress on Uniform Commercial Law in the 21st Century." International legal scholars, practitioners, legislators, administrators, and students from around the world were presented with a comprehensive survey of the current status of international commercial law. During the Congress, a distinguished panel of speakers reviewed the accomplishments of UNCITRAL and suggested directions for its future development. Crucial to this discussion was the issue of how UNCITRAL might further promote uniformity in commercial law in order to advance the maturation of a global trading community. To further this goal, UNCITRAL had previously determined to undertake the development of model rules regarding the use of "Electronic Data Interchange" ("EDI") in connection with international commercial transactions. Professor Boss' speech on EDI and the evolution of international electronic commerce was delivered as one of the keynote addresses to the UNCITRAL Congress
