Abstract
Research surrounding the gut microbiome and its importance in maintaining health continues to grow. It is currently recognized that initial gut microbial colonization begins in utero and is influenced by the mode of infant delivery, feeding method, and medication delivery. Various pathologies are currently linked with negative alterations in the gut microbiome. There are emerging means to counteract these negative effects and restore gut microbial balance and overall health. This chapter provides an overview on what is currently known regarding gut microbial colonization, perturbation, and methods to maintain and/or restore homeostasis.
