Abstract
Knee and leg injuries are commonly seen in the emergency department (ED). Knowledge of basic knee and leg anatomy will allow the emergency physician (EP) to identify true orthopedic emergencies (knee dislocation, compartment syndrome) as well as manage non–limb-threatening conditions. Physical examination of the injured knee/leg should include active and passive range of motion and a neurovascular assessment. X-ray, computed tomography (CT) scan, ultrasound, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) may also be used to evaluate the injury; the preferred modality varies with each condition and will be reviewed in this chapter. Splinting/bracing recommendations and orthopedic follow-up parameters will be discussed as well.
