97 - ETHANOL FERMENTATION IN A YEAST IMMOBILIZED COLUMN FERMENTOR
Scientific and Engineering Principles, pp 627-633
1981
Abstract
A yeast immobilized column fermentor offers a number of advantages over the present batch, continuous stirred-tank and tower fermentors. These include, higher cell densities, the ability to handle high sugar concentrations and minimization of product inhibition. This paper summarizes our preliminary study on the kinetics of physical immobilization of yeast in a packed column and the performance of an immobilized cell tubular fermentor (ICTF) utilizing Saccharomyces cerevisiae NRRL-Y-132 to convert a synthetic glucose medium to ethanol.
