Addressing rigor, validity, and reliability
01 Jan 2022
Abstract
Social scientists have developed common understandings about signifiers of rigor and quality, authenticity or validity (truth), and reliability (consistency) to demonstrate sound, credible science. Researchers continue to debate these standards and even whether to describe research as "science". Out of that debate have emerged strong norms that all researchers should consider and to which they should adhere. This chapter focuses on the concepts of quality, validity, and reliability when both interview and focus group methods are being used and interpreting the results. It includes 10 steps for ensuring validity and four steps for addressing reliability. The chapter helps the researchers to learn ways to ensure both validity and reliability during every stage of their project, especially when conducting interviews and focus groups. Researchers will also learn to be aware of the main barriers to validity and how to overcome them. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2022 APA, all rights reserved) (Source: create)
