Adolescent Group Art Therapy 1
Creative Arts-Based Group Therapy with Adolescents, pp 69-86

Abstract
In this chapter, art therapy is defined and its use in group therapy with adolescents is outlined. The author presents case material illustrating both successes and failures within the implementation of these groups, considering topics such as structure, taking developmental capacities into account, co-leadership, stages of group development, leadership stances, and how groups can provide a second family to adolescent members. Recommendations for using art in psychotherapy groups are offered.
This chapter presents both successes and “therapy fails.” “Fails,” particularly in adolescent work, are most instructive because they offer opportunities for growth and connection. Utilizing the art process takes advantage of multiple ways to give and receive information other than relying solely on words. Therapeutic space has been understood as a crucial part of psychotherapy since its inception. In group work, the holding space is created by the group itself, and the group becomes the real space, much like the art. The level of structure, expectation, and motivation, combined with opportunities for choice and autonomy, resulted in a group experience that promoted the exploration of interpersonal relationships, distress tolerance, emotional management, adherence to rules, delayed gratification, repetition for mastery, and opportunities for sensory regulation. In the style of Rubin, a word of warning for the non-art therapist in using art media in their clinical work.
