Abstract
We have developed an innovative continuing medical education (CME) program to improve the abilities of community practitioners to manage common cardiology problems. Program participants interacted with standardized patients (SP) in nine station Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE), followed by group discussions facilitated by medical faculty and a cardiologist. The SPs were trained to assess the participants’ clinical skills using checklists, entering data into computers located within each examining rooms. The checklists were designed to assess participants’ knowledge of cardiology, as well as their skills in interviewing, physical examination, and counselling. The computer immediately generated detailed individual reports: a skills report, reflecting performance of core skills across all nine stations with group means for comparison, and an omissions report, listing items missed in each case for each participant, again compared to group means. Participants reviewed and discussed their performances in small groups. These small group sessions were followed by a discussion of identified learning issues with a cardiologist. The cardiologist also discussed state-of-the-art diagnosis and treatment for the cases presented in the OSCE. Data analysis showed that participants feel the program has left them significantly better prepared to deal with a number of clinical cardiology issues and shows high participant regard for the pro gram.
