Ankle Injuries in the Child
Traumatic Disorders of the Ankle, pp 269-278

Abstract
Injury of the child’s ankle deserves special consideration because of possible effects on the highly specialized cartilage cells of the physis. Many anatomic differences exist between the immature ankle and that of the adult, but the essential difference involves the physis but its growth potential. Nonunion, incongruity of joint surface, and degenerative changes are potential sequelae at any age, but interference with growth in the child may also create problems of leg-length discrepancy, progressive angular deformity, and progressive joint surface incongruity.
