In this chapter, we present frameworks for building behavioral interventions, including those focused on behavior change at the individual level, those addressing social and structural factors, and multilevel interventions targeting several levels of our socio-ecological model. Key frameworks for developing interventions are presented, including the Behavior Change Wheel, Design Thinking, and multilevel intervention approaches to address disparities and complex health challenges. We also provide a novel tool we developed, Intervention Development for Equity and Application (IDEA), to guide decision-making when building and advancing interventions to maximize their equity and implementation. Additionally, we present a strategy, which we refer to as a task analysis, to assist with aligning an identified public health need with a theory base, mechanism(s) of action, intervention goals and objectives, specific intervention activities, and anticipated outcomes. The task analysis contributes to the development of a detailed intervention protocol and supports replication for future endeavors. Our goal in this chapter is to support ways to develop and advance interventions that use an implementation and health equity lens.
