Abstract
The field of art therapy originated from a tradition of diverse multidisciplinary ways of knowing and being. These traditions contributed to the formation of philosophy, curriculum, and pedagogy in art therapy education. Located within the developing educational traditions in art therapy are numerous challenges. To address this and other challenges in art therapy education, a Creative Dialectic Intersubjective (CDI) paradigm is proposed that emphasizes the dynamic interaction between pragmatic and constructivist forms of knowledge, intersubjective ways of being, and emergent meaning‐making along an educational continuum. The chapter aspires to convey the essential philosophy of all levels of art therapy education; incorporates the diverse multidisciplinary traditions of art therapy knowledge; parallels and preserves the dynamics of the art therapy experience; and provides flexibility relative to the fluid meta intersubjective, professional, and cultural realities.
