Assessment of Assessment: Perspectives on How Assessment Is Implemented by National Governing Body Coach Education Programmes in the United States
Sport Coach Education, Development, and Assessment, pp 229-239
2025
Abstract
The aim of this chapter is to highlight how assessment is designed and delivered as a feature of different national governing body (NGB) coach education programmes in the US. The value of assessment in the US, as in other parts of the world, is highly contested, and here we examine the wide variety of ways in which assessment is defined and implemented. Leaders within many sports organisations make the claim that coaching is one of their top priorities in an agenda of advancing sport performance, development, and participation. In this chapter, best practices will be shared by highlighting ways to utilise limited resources in a complex context with the goal of promoting coach learning. This will be achieved through offering a series of authentic, context-rich, case studies, developed with US Hockey, USRowing, and other NGBs. The purpose of sharing these case studies is to highlight the practical application of different coach assessment approaches. Within these, attention will be drawn to the key principles, issues, and challenges.
