BY THE BEDSIDE: LESSONS ABOUT COMMUNICATION FROM AN INTERNAL MEDICINE PROGRAM DIRECTOR
Innovation and Leadership in English Language Teaching, pp 133-146
01 Jan 2011
Abstract
In the course of a rapid transition from a program in internal medicine staffed by U.S.-trained residents to one staffed by internationally trained doctors, the program director created a one-station Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) test for all residents to serve as a diagnostic for clinical and communication skills. The OSCE proved useful as an ongoing tool for formative assessment and instruction for all residents working in this urban hospital clinical setting. This chapter is a narrative of the overall transition and focuses on the lessons on communication gleaned from that transition.
