Abstract
The hearing mechanism is one of the most intricate systems in the body. Environmental sound undergoes transduction into several forms from acoustic to mechanical to neural in the process of hearing. The auditory system is thus a high fidelity transducer and processor that efficiently codes intricate acoustic cues for complex stimuli such as speech. In this chapter we explain the role of each part of the ear in the process of hearing. We also emphasize the principle that “we hear not with our ears, but with our brain." [1st paragraph]
