Handbook of Intervention Science: From Design to Implementation, pp 3-28
01 Jan 2025
Abstract
Intervention science comprises diverse and multiple skills to accomplish the exciting but arduous work of building, evaluating, disseminating, implementing, and scaling interventions. Given the unique characteristics of behavioral intervention research, there are professional and career-building considerations and decision-making specific to the pursuit of this form of inquiry. This initial chapter considers what it takes to become and be an intervention scientist by examining the skills needed and key pivotal career decisions that arise along the pathway of building an intervention. As intervention science is a “team sport” we also examine considerations for building teams and provide guidance for constructing, nurturing, and sustaining research staff. Finally, as funding is necessary to support intervention research, we discuss tips for writing grants designed to support intervention development and examine issues related to protecting intellectual property.
