Abstract

Exudative lesions of the vocal folds include polyps, Reinke’s edema, cysts, and other lesions. Traditionally, they have been managed using resection with cold instruments by most laryngologists, although some specialists have advocated ablation using a CO2 laser. Vascular lasers appear to offer greater safety and precision than CO2 lasers. Vascular lasers such as the blue laser have been used in the operating room and in office settings to treat such lesions. Laryngologists should be familiar with specific techniques and laser settings that permit safe use of the blue laser for these vocal fold pathologies. Further evidence is needed to confirm or refute long-term safety and efficacy, but excellent early results have been obtained in office and operating room environments.
