Blue Laser Therapy of Vocal Process Granuloma - 5
01 Jan 2023
Abstract
Vocal process granuloma is a benign lesion of the posterior glottis commonly encountered in laryngology practice. The etiology is multifaceted with laryngopharyngeal reflux and phonotrauma being the most common causes. Affected patients are asymptomatic or may complain of repetitive throat clearing, globus pharyngeus, and foreign body sensation. Treatment is daunting given the high rate of recurrence. Conservative management is successful in less than one-third of the cases, and surgical intervention using cold steel instruments or lasers is recommended often. Various lasers have been used to treat vocal process granuloma; and many laryngologists have avoided lasers in favor of cold instruments in order to minimize thermal injury to the base of this inflammatory lesion. Superior tissue interaction and decreased thermal injury risk have made blue laser a clinically valuable option for treatment of this challenging lesion. Adjunct treatment to control contributing factors remains important.
