Abstract
This chapter details the
Bordetellae
as fastidious, non–carbohydratefermenting, tiny, gramnegative coccobacilli that grow aerobically on starch blood agar or synthetic medium. The Bordetellae’s attachment proteins include a 69kDa outer membrane protein, filamentous hemagglutinin, and fimbriae.
Bordetella pertussis
is an exclusive human pathogen that causes epidemic pertussis, and it is also the usual cause of endemic and sporadic pertussis.
B. parapertussis
is an infrequent cause of pertussis in the United States and is genetically more closely aligned with
B. bronchiseptica
, a common veterinary pathogen that causes upper respiratory tract illnesses in animals. The chapter also examines
B. holmesii
, which can cause pertussislike illness in otherwise healthy persons.
