Care of the pediatric burn patient is challenging and requires keen attention to the unique characteristics of children that can complicate many aspects of burn care, including airway management, fluid resuscitation, wound care, surgical treatment, and pain management. A multidisciplinary team approach is essential for optimal outcomes. As with any trauma patient, first priorities are the ABCs, although knowledge of the special burn-related considerations at each step is critical. Treatment of smoke inhalation injury and titrated, goal-directed fluid resuscitation are lifesaving measures for major burn patients. Burn patients can be hypermetabolic and prone to hypothermia, which must be avoided. The extent and depth of the burn wound are the primary determinants of wound management. New innovations hold promise for improvements in all aspects of burn care, especially burn depth diagnosis and wound healing.
