Abstract
In the late 1960s, labor was challenged anew by community activists intent on reducing accidents and hazards at work. For example, a coalition of VISTA organizers, public health physicians, retired miners, and leaders of coal union locals was formed to win benefits for victims of black lung disease. Although the UMW A was not involved at that time, it has since taken charge of this effort with distinction. Similarly, retired textile workers have received compensation benefits and strict controls on exposure to cotton dust through brown lung associations in mill towns in the South.
