Abstract

mindfulness personal awareness personal growth Self-awareness self-care
Healing—making patients “whole” again—involves more than curing disease and is promoted by the human connections between clinicians and patients. In the art of clinical care, practitioners uniquely combine their knowledge, skills, attitudes, beliefs, and emotional responses to patients in the service of healing. Much of this art involves clinicians using personal reactions to patients for their patients’ benefit. Self-aware practitioners can be more “skillful artists” in applying their therapeutic interventions. Attention to developing self-awareness and nurturing one’s personal growth and well-being will make clinicians more effective healers.
