Chapter 14 - CBT-I for adolescents
Adapting Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia
2022
Abstract
Insomnia disorder is both widespread and persistent during adolescence. It impacts myriad aspects of adolescent functioning including risk for psychopathology, somatic complaints, and behavioral and academic problems. Cognitive-behavioral therapy for insomnia in adolescents (CBT-I) is an efficacious intervention, though a number of adaptations have been recommended. These include addressing the circadian shift to eveningness preference, a naturalistic application of sleep restriction, involving caregivers in treatment, and incorporating mindfulness components. CBT-I can be effectively delivered to adolescents in a variety of modes with a range of comorbidities. Secondary outcomes may also be improved. While current research on the efficacy of CBT-I in adolescents and the adaptation of treatment principles for optimal delivery are promising, more research in this area is needed.
