Chapter 23 - Building dream STEAM teams: Harnessing interdisciplinarity to enrich research
Handbook of Organizational Creativity, pp 329-342
2023
Abstract
This chapter examines STEAM, the integration of the arts or the humanities into science, technology, engineering, or math instruction that accentuates creativity and multimodal expression. Three common challenges interfering with STEAM instruction are outlined: conflicting tacit beliefs about creativity, unclear criteria for identifying originality in student work, and ambiguity in assessing student creativity. To address these challenges, twelve instructional leadership steps are provided. As new research teams can be daunting to lead, an example STEAM research team is described that harnesses interdisciplinarity (engineering, psychology, and education). The chapter concludes with three pointers for developing dream STEAM research teams: go out on a limb, bank your half-baked ideas, and be the glue.
