Depression is one of the most common mental health conditions among adolescents in India. Given that cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) has a large evidence base supporting its efficacy in treatment for depression in adolescents, it is recommended as the first line of treatment for depression in Indian adolescents. Although a definitive culturally adaptive CBT for Indian adolescents has yet to be established, the limited literature provides preliminary evidence supporting the potential efficacy of CBT and CBT-informed treatments for adolescents with depression in India. This chapter discusses the application of CBT for the treatment of depression in adolescents and highlights specific considerations to implementation of CBT in Indian context. Extant literature evaluating CBT and CBT-informed treatments for depression in adolescents is reviewed and future directions for clinical work and research in India are discussed.
