Chapter 6 - Spinal interneurons, motor synergies, and modularity
Spinal Interneurons, pp 171-203
2023
Abstract
This chapter explores circuitry for motor synergies and the interneuronal support of these from perspectives of neuroethology, neuromechanics, and neuroengineering. This chapter describes and evaluates the data supporting motor synergies, including both temporal and spatial synergies, and the combinations of these. What can currently be inferred about possible interneuron organization, and afferent and descending control of motor synergies, is presented here. How neuroengineering approaches can recruit and modulate motor synergies and interneurons is explored. The potential impacts of spinal plasticity on motor synergies are evaluated, and supporting data discussed. This chapter concludes by summarizing the current gaps in knowledge and issues in understanding motor synergies.
