Abstract
This chapter explores arts management education's place in the academy and how it has evolved as an academic discipline. Through a theory-based assessment of the spaces where arts management education intersects with the quasi-professionalized field of practice, including connections between research and practice, the often-blurred lines between practitioner and academic, and the relative importance of credentialing, this chapter argues that arts management is not yet a professionalized field of inquiry. The chapter culminates with recommendations for further research that can contribute to the creation of a holistic social history of the field of arts management.
