Abstract
For many years, the relationship between sport participation and building a better society in the United States has been well documented. These various perspectives on what constitutes civic engagement provide the foundation for this discussion. I critically analyze the assertion that sport has the potential to be a powerful vehicle for building society but also explore the potential downside of sport, especially as we move beyond the COVID-19 pandemic. The downside of sport can carry negative implications for future generations. I conclude with proposing strategies that student athletes, their coaches, and sport leaders can implement to further the individual and collective positive impact that sport can have on the society in which we live.
