Book chapter
Combining interviews and focus groups and mixing methods
01 Jan 2022
Abstract
Focus groups and interviews can be conducted, analyzed, and reported as stand-alone data in a study or combined together in one study. This chapter gives researchers tips and strategies for deciding when and how to combine them. There are many ways to combine interviews and focus groups that play to the strengths of each method. For example, one could use a qualitative case study design starting with focus groups of clients who have completed different therapies. Interviews could then be conducted with the clients to examine their specific experiences with therapy by engaging them in multiple individual interviews. The chapter provides a summary of 11 possible ways to combine data types in a study and how to sequence the data and lists out the benefits of each. It presents a few examples illustrating how to use them with other types of data in mixed-methods studies. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2022 APA, all rights reserved) (Source: create)
