Abstract
The main concern of this paper is the problem of model validation. In this context we discuss recent advances in the practical implementation of topological methods for the characterization of three dimensional flows and show how this analysis can be economically performed for bidimensional maps. From this new perspective we explore the relation between braids and heteroclinic tangles. Several remarks and directions for further research follow naturally.
