Common Eye Diseases, Their Visual Outcomes, and Strategies for Enhancing Use of Remaining Vision
A Comprehensive Guide to Safety and Aging, pp 271-294
2023
Abstract
Eye diseases and disorders as well as their associated visual impairments are major global health care concerns. There are numerous potential causes of vision impairment. This chapter highlights the areas of greatest relevance and those encountered most frequently in the aging population, namely, cataracts, diabetic retinopathy, stroke, open angle glaucoma and age-related macular degeneration. It describes the characteristics of these eye disorders and discusses available treatments. Additionally, the chapter provides a brief overview of the visual changes, strategies, and resources for each disorder with a discussion that emphasizes rehabilitative strategies that enhance the use of remaining vision for individuals who have experienced irreversible vision loss. Individuals with vision loss often struggle with standard eye chart testing due to impaired central vision, peripheral vision, contrast sensitivity or brightness sensitivity. A low vision refraction is a pivotal point in the low vision evaluation and allows the clinician to determine a person's corrective spectacle prescription that will ensure optimal focus.
