Abstract
This article reviews the emergence of the term ‘community health’ in medical and public health discourse, and summarizes the rationale for its use as well as its varied uses over time. Common themes underlying the concept of community health, including health as a broadly defined construct, the multiple determinants of health, the need for multidisciplinary and intersectoral approaches, the importance of community participation, the need for local as well as global action, and especially the relevance of the construct of community or population in understanding health and its determinants, are reviewed. The impact of the concept of community health in public health practice and health care as well as in health-related research are discussed, and recent examples summarized. Limitations of the concept as well as implications of its use are reviewed.
