Abstract
Prior to 2017, the United States (U.S.) was experiencing an influx of first and second-generation immigrant and refugee children. It was estimated that 1 in 4 youth under the age of 18 were living with an immigrant or refugee parent, and approximately 60,000 child refugees entered public schools in 2017. These individuals come from diverse racial/ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds, and their migration and resettlement experiences differ. Pre-resettlement histories can have consequential impact on students’ academic careers, and characteristics of the receiving school and community directly influence how students, namely, adolescents, succeed in their transition to schooling and adulthood. Lancaster City provides an ideal context for examining refugee schooling in the United States through their community middle school.
