Competence to Consent to Treatment
Forensic Mental Health Assessment
01 Jul 2014
Abstract
Chapter 10 discusses competence to consent to treatment. Evaluations for competence to consent to inpatient treatment arise in circumstances that involve an individual seeking inpatient psychiatric treatment, and may be associated with impaired psychosocial functioning and rational decision-making. Evaluations of competence to consent to treatment are therefore useful in assessing whether the individual appreciates the nature of inpatient treatment, is willing to consent to such treatment, is able to provide such consent voluntarily, and is able to understand the part of treatment associated with hospital discharge.
