Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) is characterized by severe pain, and dysregulation of the autonomic, somatosensory, and motor systems. Initially, it is restricted to the affected part and centralizes over time. Primary mechanisms are sympathetic maintenance early, central sensitization of pain transmission neurons, and glial activation.
