Abstract
After World War II race underwent a substantial reevaluation within anthropology and as a consequence suffered a significant erosion of its centrality to the discipline, but it wasn’t until 1967 when popular opinion finally caught up with anthropology’s assessment ofThe Races of Mankind. In that year, according to Dorren Martin-Ross, the former registrar of the Anthropology Department Archives at the Field Museum, due to the political climate in the wake of the civil rights movement and the burgeoning black power movement, “the Hall [of the Races of Mankind] had become an embarrassment.”¹ The museum decided to dismantle the hall
