Consultation and Program Development: Juvenile Probation
The Path Forward: Psychological Services in the Community with Justice-Involved Individuals and to Forensic Systems, pp 277-291

Abstract
Juvenile probation is the primary means of providing oversight to justice-involved youth in the community. This chapter focuses on the role of the consultant in helping to deliver these services in a way that is both effective and grounded in human developmental and other research evidence. For psychologists consulting with probation departments seeking to transform their approaches to youth probation to align with best practices, this chapter focuses on changing the practices of system actors, rather than the behaviors of individual youth directly. Such consultants work directly with probation officers and leadership to modify how they structure and engage in youth supervision. In particular, psychologists can apply their knowledge of relevant participatory and implementation research methodologies to foster partnerships with probation departments, leadership, and officers, and educate probation personnel on the relevant behavioral principles underlying recommended juvenile probation policy and practice and support their implementation.
