The Psychology and Management of Project Teams, pp 101-136
01 May 2015
Abstract
Context is an inherent and critical component of organizational research, including work on project teams. This chapter explores the multilevel influences on project teams by exploring contextual factors that affect project performance. The discussion begins by understanding the salience of context within project teams and provides important distinctions between team and project performance. This chapter is framed using a life-cycle perspective within the multilevel approach, juxtaposing the multilevel influences on project performance as the team moves through various temporal phases (i.e., identification, definition and execution, and termination). Team member churn is considered within this framework, and various team-level influences on project performace are discussed, including team size, transition, action, and interpersonal processes. Finally, contextual influences on project performance are presented, such as the influences of human resource systems, organizational support, and climate. An exploration of future research directions in this area is offered.
