Healthy development in young children: Evidence-based interventions for early education, pp 233-248
01 Jan 2020
Abstract
Educators and caregivers are in a great position to make a positive impact on children's creative lives. Creativity, like typical school subjects, involves a set of skills that can be taught. This chapter discusses creativity as expressed in early educational contexts. It stress that early childhood is an optimal time for promoting creativity and imagination in children. It then discusses the key cognitive, socio-emotional, and environmental factors that support and impede the development and expression of creative and imaginative behaviors. Next, it describes the formal conceptualizations and definitions of creativity and how educators, parents, and scholars think about creativity. It also examines the key factors that influence the expression (or nonexpression) of creative behaviors. Finally, the chapter provides some guidelines for how these behaviors could be promoted in children, and discusses the importance of considering creativity as a long-term, even lifelong, process that can be nurtured.
