Cultural Asset Mapping in Urban Communities
The Routledge Handbook of Urban Cultural Planning, pp 125-139
2025
Abstract
This chapter explores the practice of cultural asset mapping, a collaborative process to identify and collect information about a community's cultural resources. These can include tangible and intangible assets, from physical spaces to values and norms. Cultural asset maps inform cultural and city planning and policymaking. In this chapter, the authors detail the ethics and power dynamics of cultural asset mapping, and best practices for its implementation. They explore a number of examples of cultural asset mapping, including projects in a large and small US city, as well as two projects conducted by the authors in Philadelphia, PA. This chapter ends with recommendations on process, products, and guiding questions.
