Cybersupervision in Psychotherapy

Abstract
This chapter provides an overview of the state of cybersupervision literature in psychotherapy, with an emphasis on systemic cybersupervision. It presents a historical context of cybersupervision, and reviews definitions and conceptualizations of cybersupervision. The chapter discusses the logistics of initiating and maintaining the cybersupervision relationship, and examines the various forms and platforms of cybersupervision. The advent of technology has afforded supervisors the ability to move beyond the physical boundaries that are inherent in physical supervision and into the online world. While there are similarities between traditional supervision processes and cybersupervision processes, there are considerable nuanced aspects within cybersupervision that require additional considerations. Once adequate cybersupervision competence is determined, and supervisees are adequately trained, supervisors can begin establishing the logistics of supervision. The different forms of communication technology used in cybersupervision can be characterized in two ways; synchronous and asynchronous. Videoconferencing is the most widely used new technology for cybersupervision practices.
