Delivery characteristics of behavioral interventions
Handbook of Intervention Science: From Design to Implementation, pp 271-285
01 Jan 2025
Abstract
In this chapter, we highlight the multitude of factors to consider when designing a behavioral intervention's delivery characteristics. This entails decision-making about the content that will be delivered, the mode of delivery, who will deliver the intervention, and at what intensity and duration. Other delivery decisions are related to materials, equipment, cost, and staffing needed for the intervention. Few guidelines exist for developing interventions, and there is a poor understanding of how decisions are made as to an intervention's delivery characteristics. However, how an intervention is delivered is the heart of the matter or the backbone of an intervention. This chapter offers a “roadmap” to guide the decision-making processes when developing a new intervention or adapting an evidence-based program for a different context and/or population.
