Abstract
The use of personal protective equipment (PPE) is crucial to assuring sustainable clinical operations during outbreaks of infectious disease, due to its ability to significantly drive down rates of incidence and spread across a myriad of diseases. The rapid spread of the SARS-CoV-2 virus and complications associated with COVID-19 led governments and citizens to adopt personal protective measures for an extended length of time. The effects associated with prolonged use of PPE during the COVID-19 pandemic have been found to be both physiological and psychological. Among these effects, extended PPE use, while beneficial, led to or exacerbated a range of dermatological reactions among healthcare workers and others. This chapter explores the range and severity of dermatological reactions that have been documented in the literature as well as factors contributing to these patterns. We use these data to suggest a set of best practices to inform mitigation strategies going forward.
