Designing and studying mentoring programs: review and discussion
Handbook of Research Methods in Careers, pp 120-137

Abstract
Mentoring programs continue to be an essential source of professional development for employees throughout their careers. However, research on mentoring programs has not kept pace with the proliferation of mentoring programs across organizational contexts. There are studies that identified the benefits of participation in mentoring programs but lack a focus on and critique of the research designs and typical features of mentoring programs. With the exception of a handful of papers that provided a review on formal mentoring programs, there is a general lack of literature review work that summarizes and critiques mentoring programs’ features and empirical studies on such programs. In total, there were 34 empirical articles selected. The findings covered: (1) use of theory; (2) research designs; (3) research concepts and variables; and (4) mentoring program goals and features.
