Abstract

Cranial vault Craniofacial skeleton Distraction Distraction osteogenesis Mandible Maxilla Orbit (anatomy) Orthodontics Treacher Collins syndrome
Distraction osteogenesis has been evaluated for eventual clinical use in the reconstruction of the mandible, cranial vault, midface, orbit, and other areas of the craniofacial skeleton. Many studies have been performed in animal models and subsequently applied in humans. The earliest use of distraction osteogenesis in the craniofacial skeleton was described in the orthodontic literature and involved the rapid expansion of the midpalatal suture of the maxilla. The zygoma has not received as much investigative attention as the other anatomic areas, but the technique is now being evaluated in this region as well.
