Abstract

Popular Twitch streamer F1NN5TER was temporarily banned in 2023 from the live video streaming platform for, according to him, “prolonged touching of female presenting breasts.” F1NN5TER markets himself as the “Most popular ‘woman’ (male) of all time - Genderfluid,” because although he speaks with a masculine baritone and goes by male pronouns, he wears feminine clothing and makeup during streams. F1nn’s burlesque sexual performance differs from drag in that it caters more to the straight male gaze. F1nn emulates camgirls, performing reluctant intimacy with her audience and adopting a cutesy feminine persona while simultaneously insisting on his masculinity. This kind of playfulness with gender represents an ironic engagement with gender norms endemic to much of the largely GenZ audience on Twitch. This analysis applies gender performativity to F1nn’s streams, his temporary ban from Twitch, and the discourse among his GenZ audience on the r/f1nn5ter subreddit.
